“He who knows the other and knows himself can fight a hundred battles without ever being in danger.” <\/em>This quote from Sun Tzu justifies the existence of a thousand Earth observation satellites, which are the only means of quantifying a country’s wealth… and that of its enemy.<\/p>\n

The satellite data market is booming, fuelled by the liberalisation of new applications and new technical solutions. But the duality of satellite imagery is so strategic that it also drives many sovereign public programmes, while we are gradually entering an era of mistrust that spells the end of American hegemony.<\/p>\n

On 29 April 1986, the Chernobyl disaster, hidden by the Soviet authorities, was revealed by NASA’s Landsat-5 satellite. This is the most famous example of Big Brother’s rise to the heavens, the dawn of a new information age. Today, 10% of the 12,400 active satellites in Earth orbit[1]<\/a> are dedicated to Earth observation. It is the second most powerful space market after telecommunications. Its value for 2030 is estimated at $700 billion[2]<\/a>.<\/p>\n
