So much so that by 2040, the image\u00a0of the European space sector will have changed profoundly, centred around strategic needs and defence \u2013 in other words, a reclaiming of sovereign authority by the states. The financial dynamics surrounding the space sector will therefore need to change at the dawn of the 2040s, with a logical easing of investment, whilst remaining on high alert against any risk of an infringement on sovereignty, with several major projects to be tackled.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Momentum <\/em>and tensions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The invasion of Ukraine, the increasing number of disruptions affecting satellite services and the uncertainties surrounding the long-term nature of the US commitment have placed space back at the heart of European defence policies. This development goes beyond a mere increase in budgets: it reflects a reappropriation of space by governments, which are now keen to guarantee their access to communications, intelligence and positioning services in a contested environment.
