This article describes the difficulties awaiting the industry and some opportunities arising from them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A significant sector<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the European Commission points out:<\/p>\n<p>The chemicals industry is one of Europe\u2019s largest manufacturing sectors. As an \u2018enabling industry\u2019, it plays a pivotal role in providing innovative materials and technological solutions to support Europe&#8217;s industrial competitiveness. (\u2026) The chemicals industry produces petrochemicals, polymers, basic inorganics, specialties, and consumer chemicals.
