As we approach the final phase of the European Citizens’ Panels and following the Conference Plenary in October, it is a good time to take stock of the Conference so far. The third and final sessions of the Panels are about to start, in which citizens will conclude their deliberations and decide on the recommendations they will present to the Conference Plenary meetings in December and January.

Has public reception of the Conference changed since its launch earlier this year? How representative is the Conference so far and are the randomly selected citizens representative of the diversity of EU citizens? Has the promise to include youth voices and perspectives been fulfilled? How will the upcoming meetings of the Conference Plenary take up the recommendations of the four Citizens’ Panels? What role will the nine working groups play in this process? Who will be the main political drivers behind the final proposals and what role will the European Commission and the European Parliament play in this process? How involved will national governments be in the next phases of the Conference?
