A Reader’s Digest: Ethiopian crisis, panorama of cross interests

FROM OUR JUNIOR TEAM /

The Horn of Africa and Ethiopia particularly drew our attention when we wrote the annual trends in January 2020 and January 2021. This quote from our January GEAB issue: ‘Our warnings about the Horn of Africa and the risks of Africa becoming a playground for the conflicts of the unorganised multipolar world seem likely to dominate the year and cloud our overall prognosis for the double African decade’ proved to be particularly accurate in the days following its publication. This prompts us today to take a closer look at the Ethiopian crisis.

As we wrote in January, “this was not just another African war,” but a violent conflict set to last, affecting many interests on various fronts in a highly strategic region. Before reviewing the different fronts and interests mobilised to try to see more clearly the evolution of the situation, let us return to the scene.
