Electing a head of state through a platform once designed merely for gamers to chat: what seemed, until recently, a science-fiction scenario—apocalyptic to some, utopian to others—is now our political reality. On 10 September, Nepalese citizens ended several days of unrest by electing Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice of the country’s Supreme Court, as Prime Minister via the Discord platform.
It all started on TikTok, where Nepalese users (Nepal is one of the youngest countries in Asia, with a median age of 25.3) saw a proliferation of videos of the children of the country’s ministers surrounded by luxury cars, interspersed with images of the poorest populations.
This trend, based on the lifestyles of Nepo Kids (from the Philippines and Indonesia), gradually changed tone to become a denunciation of corruption in the country.
