ANTICIPATION
America takes control of the Western Roman Empire. And that’s good news!
The United States, no longer defined solely by its WASP[1] identity, stands as the Vatican’s largest financial contributor, providing €13.6 million, or 28.1% of total funding. In contrast, combined European contributions amount to around €7.9 million, or 16.3%[2].
As a result, American influence over the Holy See is considerable, albeit extremely discreet. Notably, during the George W. Bush era, neo-conservatives extended their reach into various institutions, including the Vatican, often leaving disruption in their wake[3].
It was this movement that contributed to the quasi-schism that shook the hushed corridors of the Holy See, culminating in the excommunication of the Vatican ambassador to the USA in 2024, officially accused of schism[4]. The American Leo XIV sheds light on a factual situation – the United States is a major player in Catholicism – and hopefully proves that power is always more beneficial in the spotlight.
At the start of his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV inherits a Vatican marked by fault lines that have almost led to fears of a schism[5]. But we anticipate that the new pope has been chosen because he is in a position to reconcile the Catholic Church[6] (a job well started by his predecessor, even if the latter mainly played a Vatican de-radicalization card[7], thereby making the divisions more visible).
