Trump 2 – Danger for the multipolar world

We anticipated this as early as March 2023, in our calendar of special events for 2023/2024: the world, particularly the West, remained still up to the American elections. The suspense has just ended, Donald Trump has been elected with a clear majority for his second term. He had been interrupted by the Biden transition, and now his Republican party is taking control of Congress, albeit narrowly.

The effects were immediate. Although his office term does not officially begin until 20 January (Inauguration Day), Donald Trump has not waited to appoint the first members of his Cabinet (forcing the US Senate to ignore the ‘recess’ rule).

Trump 2 will not be a repeat of Trump 1. First, because he has learnt the lessons of the four years of his first term, during which he laid the foundations, and then, because the world has changed in the meantime, embracing multipolarity. New tools have been created, new players have emerged, others have become stronger, the BRICS, essentially China, have tried to speed up the process of de-dollarisation and de-Americanisation of the world. Trump 2 will come like a dog in the skittle alley in this multipolar world that has not really had time to take root. And Trump 2 will be in a hurry – he only has four years. No extra term in sight, this time.

Which continent, which region of the world, which states or ‘communities of states’, which multipolar international institution, will resist? Europe could become embroiled in a war with Russia, Asia could find itself embroiled in a war with China, South America could meekly return to the American pre-squared that it had abandoned, the Middle East could leave the BRICS ship (which is breaking up), but what remains is the African continent, the promised land of all new developments, investments and economic (and military) conflicts. Can Africa be the continent of resilience to the chaos of the world?

The analysis of conglomerates, groups and multinationals specific to Africa, which we present in this issue, enables us to anticipate the games of influence that will be played out in the coming years. A continent that is about to suffer the shock of the obsolescence of the debt system under Western obedience, IMF, WB, and must invent new financing sources.

Finally, our eco-fi feature will look at the new emerging economies in Asia and Latin America. Their economic growth is accelerating, attracting more and more foreign direct investment, supported by a clear development strategy and sound public finances. So, as well as analysing their future progress, we’ve highlighted some particularly interesting investment opportunities. This trend is complemented in this issue by short, precise investment recommendations.
