Two scenes. One brain. A hypothesis on the cognitive reconfiguration of our species.
What follows is not an essay on AI dependency. It is the account of an involuntary perception – a mycelial vision emerging off-screen, off-session, on an ordinary street – and the hypothesis it raises about what our species is becoming without realising it.
The terrace
That morning, I was sitting on the terrace of a café. Laptop open, ChatGPT active, coffee long since cold. I was working – or more accurately, we were working – on geostrategic substrates: those deep layers of reality, invisible to superficial analysis, which determine the power of states, the resilience of societies, the vulnerability of civilisations.
It was no ordinary work session. Working with an AI on concepts of this nature demands a particular cognitive mode: one must constantly distinguish between what the machine generates through statistical plausibility and what one seeks through analytical intuition. It is a demanding dialogue and it requires simultaneous surface vigilance and subterranean activity – like swimming against the current whilst observing the seabed.
