For a long time, luxury has been synonymous with visibility and ostentation. However, in the emerging digital Europe, this logic could gradually be reversed, at least for some. As everyday actions become recordable, interpretable and traceable, the true privilege may no longer be to be seen, but to be able to choose when not to be. Unless…

We are beginning to see a striking trend emerge: over the next decade, digital discretion, freedom from surveillance, and the ability to compartmentalise one’s existence will become privileges of the wealthy. This would mark a remarkable reversal of 2000 years of history, in which importance and visibility went hand in hand. In the years ahead, invisibility may acquire an entirely different status: from a commonplace condition, it will become a service, then a social and strategic advantage—and, ultimately, a luxury.
