VISION
Driven by the war in Ukraine and a deep desire for sovereignty, the European space sector is currently experiencing a period of strong momentum. So much so that by 2040, the image of the European space sector will have changed profoundly, centred around strategic needs and defence – in other words, a reclaiming of sovereign authority by the states. The financial dynamics surrounding the space sector will therefore need to change at the dawn of the 2040s, with a logical easing of investment, whilst remaining on high alert against any risk of an infringement on sovereignty, with several major projects to be tackled.
Momentum and tensions
The invasion of Ukraine, the increasing number of disruptions affecting satellite services and the uncertainties surrounding the long-term nature of the US commitment have placed space back at the heart of European defence policies. This development goes beyond a mere increase in budgets: it reflects a reappropriation of space by governments, which are now keen to guarantee their access to communications, intelligence and positioning services in a contested environment. Two complementary dynamics characterise this momentum: the accelerated implementation of space defence strategies and the mobilisation of Europe’s industrial and technological base.
