2030: A disorderly rush into Space

ANTICIPATION

Europe, the Middle East, Australia, South Korea… within this highly competitive multipolar world, many medium-sized space powers are becoming major players. Alongside the new age of aeronautics (drones), digital technology (AI, cyber, quantum) and marine technology, Space is one of the four key areas of sovereignty for the coming decades. And, after taking their first steps independently, several space powers are now aiming for greater independence, starting with their defence. Undeterred, the proliferation of private players is accelerating strategies. As a result, in their quest for space sovereignty, new powers hope to become regional hubs by 2030.

Europe – Reducing asymmetry in the event of space warfare

On 27 November 2025, the European Space Agency (ESA) ministerial conference gave a glimpse of an unprecedented movement: that of independence[1]. The effects of the war in Ukraine and the undermining of the historic alliance with the United States are beginning to weigh on multi-year budgets. Former Prime Minister of Lithuania, a country that has been fearful of its Russian neighbour for years, Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has succeeded in reconciling the European Union with the ESA in order to align the entire European space sector around the urgent need for defence sovereignty. As a result, the European space reconnaissance infrastructure project EOGS, announced in June, has secured more than €1.5 billion in funding without having to wait for the vote on the EU’s next MFF (Multiannual Financial Framework) in 2028. As European space defence takes shape, key states are preparing at their national levels:
