Post-Qatar international sport: New political actors serving new gods

Rarely has a sporting event caused so much ink to flow before it even started. The football World Cup in Qatar starts this month and it is no less than a revelation of the shift that the global system is undergoing. In this case, that of the continuity of the model in place and the discontinuity of the actors who embody it. Hosting a global competition (mainly the Olympic Games and the World Cup in football, cricket or rugby[1]) is a showcase for the host country’s political and economic model. What will be on display in the Qatari showcase is an abundance of wealth,[2] at a time when the end of abundance is being proclaimed on the Western side.[3]
