A reader’s eye on the future: “AI Advancements have been a breakthrough this year”

Bogdan Herea, founder and CEO of PitechPlus (a full-cycle software development company) and founder of Academy+Plus (a Romanian Ecole 42), is what some call the “Romanian Xavier Niel”[1] . His main expertise is in product and software development, where he uses cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and cyber security. Born in 1975 and having had access to a personal computer from an early age, Bogdan studied engineering in France as part of a European programme (at INSA Lyon). Over the years he has developed an unshakeable optimism about technological progress that offers a hopeful yet realistic vision of the digital future. An informed and exciting counterpoint to our recent anticipation of the great Western innovation bug.

Businesses are the most vulnerable organisations to cyber attacks

Today it is common knowledge that most backdoors found in an operating system or software and used by cybercriminals are left in place intentionally by the manufacturers. Windows is forced by the US government to leave “backdoors” for cyber-warfare purposes[2] or in rarer cases for espionage. The Chinese do the same with the network part. All of this is perfectly legal, of course.

When it comes to cyber security, it is always easier to attack than to defend. In recent years, the attack surface has widened, from endpoints to software, servers etc. And the more regular use of teleworking has multiplied the risks. The most vulnerable targets are companies and individuals. Large groups generally have an in-house cyber security department. It is more complicated for small and medium-sized companies, which is why the demand from the mid-market is increasingly important.  There are some fairly simple steps to take to protect yourself. You can favour certain operating systems, such as Linux over Windows, to start with. The main issue is to implement, in addition to antivirus software, robust authentication systems, with multiple factors, biometric or not. This is the minimum level to be implemented on all systems. You must protect the computer points with agents that monitor network traffic and the processes running on the machines. Again, this is quite simple to set up. And then you need a team to analyse the alerts. This is more complicated or more expensive. The increase in threats and the lack of manpower in this sector are accelerating a trend towards automation. There are so many interactions and so many levels of threats that it is difficult for a human to sort them out. This is where AI helps us to automate this step.

These protections must be coupled with insurance. These insurances have difficulty in assessing the value of a hardware and software environment, which is why they increase the prices insainly.[3] Things are moving in this direction with, for example, Google’s acquisition of several cybersecurity companies.[4] These companies collect threat reporting data and then collaborate with insurance majors, such as Allianz, who use this data, pooled across all customers of this service with access to the Google cloud, to assess threat levels and risks.[5] This system gives them much more insight and is creating a large market, especially for Europe. These coupled solutions, technological protection/insurance, are now indispensable for most companies.
