Trump, the last boomer

The triumphant re-election of Donald Trump symbolises the end of the baby-boomer generation’s dominance – their values, economic models and worldview – massively rejected, not just by a large majority of American voters, but also by global public opinion. This response was more supportive of this victory than the Western political and media spheres would admit.

And yet, Trump himself is a boomer! What insights can be drawn from this paradox and what pathways for understanding does it open?

Donald Trump’s popularity

55% of men aged between 18 and 29 voted for Trump. While only 41% of women of the same age voted the same way, only 33% (8% less) slipped a Republican ballot paper into the box in 2016[1]… Even among the black community, Trump doubled his score, from 10% of African-Americans voting Republican 4 years ago to 20% on 5 November[2]. Among Hispanics, 32% chose Trump 4 years ago, compared with 46% this year… despite promises of an anti-migration policy[3]. The same is true of the Arab population… despite Trump’s unconditional support for Israel[4].

Ultimately, which category of the population voted for Kamala Harris more than it should have? Baby boomers, who reversed the habit of older people voting Republican. This time, older people voted Democrat[5].
