Looking Ahead to 2040: From Fear of Panzootics to Agricultural Lockdown

The Covid-19 pandemic has considerably ramped up the fear in the agro-food sector of an epizootic/epiphytic pandemic on strategic foodstuffs (pork, rice, flour, etc.). The conditions that favour human, vegetable or animal-related pandemic are actually the same, namely overpopulation and interconnectivity. We anticipate that the scheduled modernisation of agriculture will be considerably accelerated as a result. Far from a return to a more “organic”, back-to-nature approach, we will be breaching a new stage in the artificiality of human feeding with a resolute separation of agriculture and ultimately humans from a nature that is sick (having been weakened by industrial pollution and all kinds of imbalances) and spreading disease.

Threats abound

For many years, the number of worldwide epizootics has also been multiplying (African swine flu, highly pathogenic avian flu and the new illnesses from farmed fish and seafood). However, it is less difficult to draw a parallel that those same risks lead, more or less, to the same responses and feed the same fears.
