More than 30,000 civilians have been killed in the ongoing Israeli attack on Gaza[1], yet every ceasefire resolution at the UN Security Council continues to be blocked by US veto, while the General Assembly condemns the Israeli bombardment of Gaza by an unprecedented majority. The history of the UN Security Council itself demonstrates the dysfunctionality of a system that endorses military intervention and thus wars in the name of peace (granting mandates to external intervention forces, as in Afghanistan[2], Yugoslavia[3],…) and which was unable to prevent the war in Iraq[4] or the war in Ukraine.
Without a drastic reform of its objectives, its functioning and its representations, the very survival of the UN is at stake. A year ago, the GEAB gave it a last chance[5], but today’s struggle and the rise of new types of structures – flexible, technologically advanced, representative of the Global South[6]… are making an organisation rooted in the world of war obsolete.
